Wayfair
During my time at Wayfair, I had the opportunity to work on several different focus areas with my work on the Visual Media Display Optimization team being the longest. As part of this team, I was responsible for ensuring product media was displayed onsite in the right place, at the right time, with complete & accurate metadata. In this role I had the opportunity to lead several cross-functional initiatives focused on improving data accuracy & hygiene, creating data-driven media prioritization logic on product listings, and introduce automation to various media ingestion & outreach workflows. Additionally, I contributed to company culture outside the scope of my role by interviewing new candidates for positions within the Merchandising department, mentoring new junior-level team members, and planning social events as a member of our Social Captainship. Lastly, this role gave me a lot of exposure to data analysis tools & platforms, such as SQL, Google BigQuery, Google Data Studio, and Looker.
Work Examples
Fixing Data redundancy in media metadata
One of the largest initiatives I lead at Wayfair was to consolidate two metadata fields used to categorize product imagery. These fields, containing nearly identical data, were causing issues with how we displayed & reported on product media, leading to reduced product performance onsite. In response, I gathered a cross-functional group of stakeholders from both business & tech to address the issue. After providing initial analyses of the impact of the issue, I organized conversations with stakeholders to outline an approach, gather requirements, and align on implementation timelines. After presenting our plan to senior leadership, I secured buy-in from the tech teams to support this effort & introduce new automation to additionally address rising OpEx costs of image tagging & normalization.
Semi-Automated Image Outreach Recommendations
In order to support my colleagues outreaching to suppliers for missing imagery, I built a semi-automated workbook in Google Sheets. Due to the complexity of identifying the right type of images to ask for & rising frustration from suppliers, it was identified that an automated solution was required to inform outreach teams what image types should be prioritized for a given product. At the time, full automation required bandwidth that was unavailable, I created a workbook that provided the necessary information in a semi-automated fashion using existing data sources. This ultimately gave outreach team members a method to continue targeted outreach while ensuring that we did not further frustrate suppliers.
Interviewing, Onboarding, and mentorship
During my time at Wayfair, the company invested heavily in bringing in new talent to the organization to support our growth. I supported these hiring efforts by interviewing incoming candidates and calibrating with hiring managers afterwards. Once new candidates started, I served as a contact in their onboarding process. I lead trainings to teach new Wayfairians about how product media was ingested, stored, and displayed on site. Lastly, I became a mentor for several junior members during their co-op periods. I helped them with both cultural aspects, such as getting familiar with Wayfair & transitioning to a corporate environment, as well as professional aspects including how to structure project work, how to contribute to meetings, and reviewing their writing.
